Hornets fall in five-set battle with Mountaineers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. --- The Delaware State women's volleyball team saw its 10-game win streak come to an end at the hands of West Virginia University by way of a 3-2 Mountaineers win over the Hornets to conclude the Mountaineer Invitational on Friday night.
 
After conceding the first 25-21, Delaware State rallied back to take sets two and three by scores of 25-21 and 25-22.
 
West Virginia took set four with a commanding 25-15 score and finished with a 15-10 win in the decisive fifth set to seal the match and remain undefeated in its own tournament.
 
Offensively, the Hornets were led by Alondra Maldonado who recorded a team-high 16 kills and with five assisted blocks, she finished the night with 18.5 points total. Valeria Otero and Danielle Allen chipped in with 10 kills each.
 
Malgorzata Andersohn and Alayna Lacy combined for 46 of Delaware State's 51 assists on the night. Andersohn recorded her eighth game this season and third straight of at leasts 20 helpers. She also landed two service aces in the loss.
 
Defensively Sydney Lewis tallied a game-best 10 blocks (3 BS, 7 BA) and also recorded six kills for a total of 13.5 points. Libero Jasmal Cruz dug Delaware State out of 14 West Virginia attack attempts. Lacy and Otero also notched double-digit digs with 12 and 10 respectively for a double-double performance on the night.

The Mountaineers were led by the dynamic duo of Bailey Miller and Adrian Ell who were the only two to have double-digit kills in the home win with 18 and 17 respectively. Redshirt-freshman Kamiah Gibson handed out a match-high 37 helpers ensuring West Virginia's perfection in its own invitational.
 
Delaware State returns to action next Friday, September 23 when the Hornets open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) competition against the defending tournament champions Howard Bison. First serve from Burr Gymnasium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
