DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State baseball team swept University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in a seven-inning doubleheader by scores of 4-3 and 4-2 to open a four-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series on Thursday.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh inning in game one,
Trey Paige notched his league-leading 12th home run of the season by way of a two-run home run over the center field wall to tie the game at 3.
Â
One batter later,
Krew Bouldin, who was also the game's winning pitcher, would help his own cause and walked the game off with a home run of his own to seal the first win of the day for Delaware State.
Â
After a scoreless first four innings, Kyle Cincinnati broke the scoring open with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth for a 2-0 UMES lead.
Â
Paige got the Hornets on the board in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI-ground out that cut the Hawks lead in half, 2-1 through five complete innings.
Â
Hawks' designated hitter Brantley Cutler tallied another home run to his campaign that gave UMES its final lead of the afternoon in the top of the seventh inning.
Â
On the mound, Bouldin went the distance for his first win of the season. He scattered four hits and only suffered three earned runs through seven innings. Bouldin struck out one and did not allow a walk.
Â
Paige led the Hornets offensively with three RBIs. Paige and
Miguel Rivera both recorded multi-hit games with two each.
Â
Delaware State started off the night cap with a four-run bottom of the first. A UMES wild pitch allowed Rivera to cross home plate for a 1-0 lead. Paige doubled the advantage after scoring on a Hawks balk for a 2-0 lead.
Â
With
Brady Daniels on third,
Alec Rodriguez stepped up to the plate for his first at bat of game two. Rodriguez added two more runs for the Hornets with a two-RBI home run to right field for a 4-0 lead through one complete inning. This home run marked the first for Rodriguez's collegiate career.
Â
UMES got two runs back between the fourth and fifth innings, but a two-run deficit would be as close as the Hawks would get to a lead.
Â
Offensively, Rivera recorded his second-straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-2 performance. He also drew a walk and scored a run. Rodriguez's two RBIs were a game high.
Â
On the mound,
Evan Harris collected his fifth win from the starting role. He struck out six batters while only allowing two hits and two runs to score through four innings of work.
Mike Carrington picked up his second save of the season after throwing three innings of shut out baseball. In that time, he only allowed one hit and one walk and struck out two batters.
Â
Delaware State and UMES will continue the four-game series tomorrow (Friday) with a single nine-inning contest. First pitch from Bob Reed Field is currently scheduled for 1 p.m. Â
