Dover, Del. (Apr. 30, 2022) --- The Delaware State softball team opened its final series of the regular season with a doubleheader loss to MEAC rival Howard at home today. The Bison took the opener 10-3 and completed the sweep with a 9-5 victory in the nightcap.
Howard scored four runs in the top of the first inning of the opener and never trailed in the contest.
The Bison led 7-0 before Delaware State attempted a comeback with a run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth.
Howard tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the sixth to close out the scoring.
Shortstop Kyla Johnson had a two-run single in the fifth to highlight the Hornets' offense in game one.
Delaware State had just five singles in the opener. The Hornets were also plagued by three errors in the game.
In the nightcap, the Hornets trailed 2-0 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning to lead for the first time on the day.
Emma Glawson had a run-scoring double in the second, while two Hornets crossed the plate on Howard errors in the inning.
The Bison responded with four runs in the top of the third inning to regain the lead 6-3.
Glawson doubled in two more runs in the Delaware State third to cut Howard's lead to 6-5.
Glawson was three-for-three with three RBI to pace the Hornets' 10-hit attack in game two. She was four-for-six in the doubleheader.
The Hornets were held scoreless in their last four at bats in game two.
Delaware State (4-32; 3-16 MEAC) and Howard (25-20; 16-4 MEAC) will close out the series with a single game on Sunday (May 1). Start time is set for 12:00 p.m. at the DSU softball field.
The Hornets will honor their 2022 senior players prior to the game.
