Norfolk, Va. (Apr. 24, 2022) --- Norfolk State completed a three-game series sweep against Delaware State with 3-2 and 13-2 victories over the Hornets in a MEAC softball doubleheader today.
In the opener, Norfolk State scored the winning run on a one-out single by Yrral Davis in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The game was scoreless for the first five innings before the Hornets broke the ice in the top of the sixth.
Jules Ceron opened the inning with a bunt single. The next batter,
Jaelyn Baker, reached base on an error, with Ceron advancing to third on the play.
Sandrea Hord followed with single, scoring Ceron with the game's first run. Delaware State scored its second run of the inning when pinch runner
Jade King crossed the plate on a ground out by
Kyla Johnson.
Norfolk State responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth to even the score.
Loren Hudson singled in the Spartans' first run of the inning and the second scored on a double steal to tie the game.
Delaware State starter
Mayanah McIntosh allowed seven hits and two runs in 5.1 innings, but was not involved in the decision.
Ceron had two of Delaware State's five hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, Kenna Higa drove in four runs, while Tuli Iosefa and Gabby Vaughn knocked in three each to lead Norfolk State' 13-hit attack. Higa singled in two runs in the Spartans' six-run first inning and smacked a two-run homer to highlight NSU's three-run fourth. Â
Vaughn had a three-run blast in the first inning and Iosefa matched her with a three-run bomb in the second.
Delaware State led after batting in the top of the first on a two-run homer by
Jaelyn Baker, her team-leading third of the season.
The Hornets will take a break from MEAC action with a Tuesday game against George Washington at home on Tuesday. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
