Norfolk, Va. (Apr. 23, 2022) --- Kenna Higa hit a grand slam in Norfolk State's five-run first inning to highlight the Spartans' 7-2 victory over Delaware State in the opener of a three-game MEAC series today.
Delaware State starter Sydney Hoffman issued two walks and allowed a single to the first three batters before Higa cleared the bases on a shot to centerfield to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead.
The next batter, Gabby Vaughan,  followed with a homer to give Norfolk State a 5-0 lead.
The Spartans tacked on two more runs in the third to lead 7-0.
Kyla Johnson and pinch runner Sydney Glisson scored on wild pitches in the seventh inning to account for Delaware State's runs.
Norfolk State starter  Joana Vallejo allowed just four hits and struck out 12 to earn the win.
The Hornets and Spartans will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
