Cary, N.C. (Apr. 2, 2022) --- The Delaware State softball team opened a three-game MEAC series at North Carolina Central with a doubleheader loss on Saturday. The Eagles overcame an early five-run deficit to post a 10-6 victory in the opener, and scored seven runs in the second inning to highlight a 12-6 win in game two to complete the sweep.
In the opener, Delaware State grabbed the early lead with five runs in the second inning.
Jonah Cunnigan had a two-run double and
Dallas Speicher-Ramirez singled in the run for the Hornets in the second.
North Carolina answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to pull to within two.
The Hornets added a run in the sixth in the fifth on a single by
Alexis Roberson to open up a 6-3 lead.
The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to trail 6-4, and scored six runs in the sixth to pull ahead for good. Hailey Batista smacked a three-run homer to highlight NCCU's big inning.
In the nightcap, Delaware State led 1-0 before the Eagles scored seven runs in the bottom of the second to take control of the game.
Catcher Jole Raybourn hit a two-run homer in the fourth to pull the Hornets to within 9-4, but Delaware State could get no closer the rest of the way.
Raybourn had three RBI in game two, while Cunnigan was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored in game two for the Hornets.
The teams will wrap up the series a single-game on Sunday in Cary, N.C.Â
