DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State baseball team split a pair of seven-inning games in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action with the Norfolk State Spartans on Friday.
Â
Delaware State took game one 7-4 while Norfolk State took game two 11-4.
With the game tied at 3 in the bottom of the fifth inning and the bases loaded,
Mason Brewer would take advantage of the opportunity. Brewer drilled a double down the left field line which cleared the bases and put the lead in favor of Delaware State at 6-3 through five complete innings.
Trey Paige would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after capitalizing on a Spartan wild pitch for the second time in the game and extending the lead to 7-4 through six complete frames.
Â
The Spartans jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first two innings to start the first game.
Â
The Hornets would begin the comeback in the bottom of the third when an
Alan Alonso RBI-ground out brought home
Mike Worthington and cut the Norfolk State lead to 3-1. Paige took advantage of a Spartan wild pitch and brought the Hornets to within one (3-2) through three complete innings.
Miguel Rivera tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the fourth by way of an RBI-single to left field, allowing
Brady Daniels to cross home plate.
Â
On the mound,
Jordan Haddaway earned his fourth win of the year after pitching five innings in which he only surrendered six hits and four runs. He struck out two and only allowed one walk.
Â
Ethan Edelson earned the third save of his campaign after coming on in relief of Haddaway. Edelson threw two innings of no-hit baseball in which he struck out two Spartans, gave up two walks and committed one wild pitch.
Â
Brewer and Paige led the Delaware State offense with a pair of hits each.
Â
Norfolk State scored early and often in the night cap to secure the split. The Spartans were led by shortstop Brandon Cleveland who posted a perfect 5-for-5 day with five RBIs.
Â
Krew Bouldin tallied a 3-for-4 day at the plate with an RBI in game two. Alonso, Paige and Rivera accounted for the other Hornet hits.
Â
Daniels,
Jordan King and
Alec Rodriguez joined Bouldin in driving in a run.
Â
Delaware State will conclude the four-game series with Norfolk State tomorrow with a single nine inning contest. First pitch from Bob Reed Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
