Hornets fall in series finale with Mountain Hawks

DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State University baseball team lost game three of its three-game series with Lehigh University, 7-3 on Sunday at Bob Reed Field.

Lehigh used a five-run first inning to establish a lead early on and then capitalized on an error in the second to score two more runs which would seal the win for the visitors.

Miguel Rivera grounded out in the bottom the first to score Mike Worthington to prevent Delaware State from being blanked on the scoreboard.

The Hornets would get another one back in the bottom of the sixth when Alan Alonso hit a sacrifice fly into center field that brought home Mike Carrington, trimming the deficit to 7-2.

Delaware State made an attempt at a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. Krew Bouldin approached the plate with runners at the corners and drilled a single right back up the middle scoring Myles Eaddy from third.

After Carrington got on base from being hit by a pitch to have runners at each station, the Mountain Hawks made a defensive change bringing Rafe Perich over from third base to the moud and prevented the Hornets from a second-straight comeback win and sweeping them in the series.

Mason Brewer paced the offensive effort today with two hits and a walk. Trey Paige extended his hit streak two seven with a single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth.

Peter Carreca pitched five shutout innings in relief, recording three strikeouts and only surrendering one walk.

Delaware State begins an 11-game away stand starting Tuesday in Newark against University of Delaware. First pitch from Bob Hannah Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m.
