Dover, Del. (Mar. 27, 2022) ---Delaware State broke a tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 7-3 MEAC softball victory over South Carolina State today. The Hornets won the last two games in the three-game series to improve to 3-18 overall and 2-5 in the MEAC.
Delaware State led 3-0 before the Bulldogs scored three in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game.
Kyla Johnson reached base on a SC State error to lead off the Delaware State sixth.
Gabriela Garcia, who entered the game as a pinch runner for Johnson, moved to third base on a single by Emma Glawson and another Bulldog error. Garcia later crossed the plate with the go-ahead run on a sac fly by
Dallas Speicher-Ramirez.
Jonah Cunnigan singled in a sixth inning run to give the Hornets a 5-3 lead and
Jaelyn Baker doubled in two more later in the at bat for insurance.
Delaware State opened the scoring when
Courtney Kohel doubled in Baker with a first inning run.
The Hornets stretched their lead to 3-0 on a two-run pinch-hit double by
Alexis Roberson in the fourth inning.
Reliever
McKenzie Yurcaba pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win.
Delaware State outhit the Bulldogs 9-3 in the game.
The Hornets return to action next weekend with a three-game MEAC series at North Carolina Central.
