Princess Anne, Md. (Mar. 20, 2022) --- Delaware State scored four runs in the sixth inning to tie the game, but Maryland Eastern Shore scored the winning run in the seventh to post a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Hornets today.
The Hawks swept the three-game to improve to 6-17 overall and 3-0 in the MEAC. Delaware State dropped its fifth straight game to fall to 1-16 and 0-3.
Maryland-Eastern Shore scored two runs in the second inning and two in the fourth to open up a 4-0 lead.
The Hornets began their comeback when
Jaelyn Baker homered with one out in the top of the sixth.
Jade King followed with a single and pinch hitter
Jonah Cunnigan reached on an error to give Delaware State runners at second and first.
The next batter, pinch hitter
Alexis Roberson, blasted a home run to center field, with King and Cunnigan scoring ahead of her, to tie the game at 4-4.
The score was still tied when Delaware State's Emma Glawson walked to lead off the seventh, but was stranded on base.
Maryland-Eastern Shore scored the winning run on a one-out single off reliever
Sydney Hoffman in the bottom of the seventh.
The home runs by Baker and Roberson were the first of the season for the Hornets.
Delaware State returns to action with a home doubleheader against St. Peter's on Wed. (Mar. 23. Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Hornets' softball field.
