COLUMBIA, Md. --- The Delaware State baseball team opened its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) 2022 season with a 10-6 loss to the Coppin State Eagles on Friday.
Â
The Hornets got the scoring started early by way of a five-run first inning.
Alan Alonso got it started with a double to the gap in left center that brought home
Miguel Rivera to take the first lead of the game at 1-0.
Â
One at-bat later
Trey Paige and Alonso took advantage of a Coppin State error; Paige would get on base and eventually move to second while Alonso came home to score and double the Hornet lead to 2-0.
Â
On the very next at-bat,
Krew Bouldin launched his first round-tripper of the season to right field, scoring Paige and once again doubling the Delaware State advantage, 4-0 still in the top of the first.
Â
Rivera capped off the inning with an RBI-single to right field that scored
Jordan King.
Â
Coppin State strung seven runs together through the second and third innings to take the lead back that would eventually seal the home win.
Â
Paige notched his second home run of the season in the top of the fourth to get the Hornets back within one. However, a one-run deficit is as close to the lead as Delaware State would get as Coppin State added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Â
As a team, the Hornets recorded 12 hits with Alonso, King, Paige and Rivera all having multi-hit days at the plate. Alonso, along with Bouldin, led the team in walks earning a free base twice.
Â
Delaware State continues its four-game series with Coppin State tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch from Blandair Park is scheduled for 12 p.m.
