Cary, N.C. (Mar. 17, 2022) --- The Delaware State women's tennis team gave defending conference champ South Carolina State all it can handle before falling 4-3 in a marathon opening match of the MEAC Round-up at the Cary Tennis Center today.
The Hornets won two of the six singles matches and earned a point after taking two of the three doubles contests. The nearly five-hour match was essentially decided by South Carolina State's win at No. 5 singles on a third set tiebreaker.
Delaware State's Kit Yi Kay Au-Yeung continued her strong play this season, winning her fourth straight singles match 6-0, 7-5 over Rachida Berjane in the No. 1 contest to improve to 4-1 on the season.
She also teamed with
Eva Golembiovski for a 7-5 victory in the No. 2 doubles match.
Au-Yeung also improved to 4-1 in No. 2 doubles matches this spring season.
Samara Guillory also collected a singles win for Delaware State, topping SC State's Anabel Aguilar 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 Â in the No. 6 contest.
In the No. 5 singles match, Delaware State's
Baluck Deang won the first set 6-2, but SC State's Ikram Rassif evened the contest 6-3 victory in set two. Rassif completed the comeback with a 7-6 win in the third set, outscoring Deang 7-3 in the tiebreaker
Iris Leder and Daria Julia posted the other doubles win for the Hornets, coming out on top 6-1 in the No. 1 match.
Delaware State continues MEAC Round-up action with a 3:00 p.m. match against North Carolina Central on Friday (Mar. 18) at 3:00 p.m.
