Courtney Kohel (fr.; Milford, Del.) doubled in three first inning runs and
Sydney Hoffman had a solid pitching effort to lead Delaware State to its first victory of the season, 4-3 over Elon at the North Carolina Greensboro Tournament today.
After Elon failed to score in the top of the first inning, the Hornets put three on the board in the bottom of the inning.
Jaelyn Baker started the rally with a one out single and advanced to second when
Alexis Roberson followed with a walk. Baker moved to third base and Roberson to second when
Jonah Cunnigan drew a two-out walk. Kohel cleared the bases with a double down the left field line to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead.
Elon scored a run in the top of the fourth to cut Delaware State's lead to two.
The Hornets answered with a run in the fifth when
Gabriela Garcia crossed the plate on a ground out by Baker to give Delaware State a 4-1 lead.
The Phoenix pulled to within 4-2 with a run in the top of the sixth.
After retiring the first two Elon batters in the top of the seventh, Hoffman gave up a home run to cut the Hornets' lead to 4-3. Elon loaded the bases with two down , but Hoffman got the last out on a grounder to short to end the game.
The Delaware State hurler allowed six hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out two and walking three in the complete game performance.
The Hornets (1-11) fell to host UNC Greensboro 8-0 in their final game of the tournament today.
Delaware State returns to action with a home doubleheader against Penn on Wed. (Mar. 16). Game 1 is scheduled to get underway at 1:00 p.m. Â
