Sydney Hoffman's solid pitching performance was a bright spot today for the Delaware State softball team, which dropped two games on the opening day of a tournament hosted by the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
The Hornets fell to Michigan State 16-0 in their opening game, and fell short 3-0 to St. Francis (Pa.) in their second contest of the day.
Hoffman threw six innings vs. St. Francis, allowing three runs, two earned, on nine hits while striking out two and walking one.
The Red Flash scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning and added two insurance runs in the last of the sixth.
Jaelyn Baker singled with two outs in the top of the third inning for Delaware State's lone hit of the game.
In the Michigan State contest, the Hornets allowed three runs in the first and third innings to trail 6-0. The Spartans blew the game open by scoring runs in the top of the fourth.

Alexis Roberson singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Hornets (0-10) are scheduled to face Michigan State again on Saturday, and close out the tournament with contests against Elon and host UNC Greensboro on Sunday. Â
