HOT START NOT ENOUGH FOR HORNETS IN LOSS TO EAGLES

Dover, Del. (Feb. 28, 2022) –Delaware State led by 13 points midway through the first half, but couldn't keep up the pace in an 80-67 MEAC men's basketball loss to Coppin State Monday evening.
The Eagles won their seventh straight over the Hornets to improve to 7-21 overall and 6-7 in the MEAC.
The Hornets dropped their 22nd straight game to fall to 2-24 and 0-13.
Sita Conteh led four double-figure scorers for Coppin State with 22 points, highlighted by six three-point field goals (6-12).
Mike Hood came off the bench to add 16 points, while Kyle Cardaci tallied 14 and Nendah Tarke 13 for the Eagles.
Dominik Fragala also came off the bench to lead Delaware State with 24 points, highlighted by four three-pointers.
Myles Carter added 17 points and a team-high five assists for the Hornets.
Delaware State's Chris Sodom had a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Hornets started quickly in the contest, opening up a 12-1 lead on a three-pointer by John Stansbury led than five minutes into the game.
After Coppin State pulled to within 14-9, Fragala hit back-to-back three-pointers and Zach Kent nailed a jumper to stretch the Hornets' lead to 22-9 with 9:56 left in the first half.
The Eagles outscored the Hornets 15-2 over the next four minutes, and tied game at 24-24 on a three-ball by Conteh at the 5:57 mark of the first half.
Coppin State pulled ahead for the first time, 25-24, on a free throw by Conteh, and stretched its lead to 32-29 at the break.
The Eagles scored 10 of the first 13 points of the second half, and opened up a 42-32 lead with 17:48 left to play.
Coppin State opened up a 58-41 lead on a three-pointer by Cardaci at the 10:41 mark of the second half.
The Hornets could get no closer then eight points the rest of the way.       
Coppin State knocked down 14 three-pointers on 35 attempts (40.0%), while Delaware State was seven for 27 from beyond the arc (25.9%) in the game.
The Hornets will close out the 2021-22 regular season at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Thur. (Mar. 3) in Princess Anne, Md.
