Dover, Del. (Feb. 7, 2022) – Delaware State made a late charge after falling behind by double-digits early in the second half, but could not get over the hump in a 69-64 MEAC loss to Howard in Memorial Hall this evening.
The Bison won for the third time in the last four games to improve to 10-10 overall and 4-3 in the MEAC. The Hornets dropped their 15
th straight to fall to 2-17 and 0-6.
Kyle Foster led three double-figure scorers for Howard with 21 points, highlighted by six three-point field goals (6-12). Randy Brumant added 13 points (4-6 FGs) and Elijah Hawkins chipped in 11 for the Bison.
Delaware State's
Myles Carter led all players with 24 points, tying his second-best output of the season. Carter was 11-for-20 from the field, including two three-pointers on three attempts. He also tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds in the game
Fellow guard
Martaz Robinson scored a career-high 19 points for the Hornets. Robinson connected on eight of his 13 shots from the field and also grabbed eight rebounds.
Delaware State hit just nine of its 33 first half shots (27.3%), including zero-for-four on three-point attempts, but only trailed 26-20 at the break.
The Hornets were only down 28-24 after a basket by Carter early in the second half, but Howard scored 13 of the next 19 points, and opened up its biggest lead (41-30) on a three-ball by Foster at the 14:19 mark of the second half.
Delaware State answered with a 12-4 run, and pulled to within 45-42 on a three-pointer by
John Stansbury (nine points) with 10:25 left to play.
The Bison led 49-42 before Robinson and
Chris Sodom had back-to-back buckets for the Hornets to trim the deficit three again.
Foster nailed his fifth three-pointer of the game to give the Bison a 59-51 lead with 4:51 left to play.
Delaware State again pulled to within three points (59-56) following a basket by Stansbury and Carter's three-pointer with 3:14 remaining.
The Hornets could get no closer as Howard hit six-of-seven free throws and Foster iced the game with his sixth three-pointer down the stretch to seal the win for the Bison.
Delaware State hit 19 of its 30 second half shots (63.3%), but only outscored the Bison 44-43 in the final 20 minutes.
The Hornets finished the contest with a 44.4 percent shooting mark (28-for-63), while Howard shot 39.6% from the field (21-for-53).
Delaware State also held a slight rebound edge, 38-36.
Howard took 26 free throws in the game, hitting 17 (65.4%), while the Hornets attempted just eight at the charity stripe, connecting on five (62.5%).
The Bison were also aided by the three-point shot, nailing 10 on 30 attempts (33.3%), while Delaware State hit just three-of-12 shots from beyond the arc (25%).
STINGERS
Sodom had a game-high four blocks, giving him 20 in the last four games and a MEAC high 48 for the season… he also tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds … The Hornets return to action on Wed. (Feb. 9) at home against Maryland-Eastern Shore … game time is set for 7:30 p.m., following the Delaware State/UMES women's contest in Memorial Hall.
