CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY – WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AT DELAWARE STATE

Dover, Del. (Feb. 2, 2022) --- Basketball was the first sport in which women could compete at then Delaware State College in the 1930s.
Back then, ladies collegiate basketball teams consisted of six players, three shooting forwards and three defensive guards. The forwards could only advance the ball to the basket while the guards prevented the opposing team from scoring. There was no Center position.
Any player handling the ball had three dribbles before having to pass or shoot the ball. The forwards and / or guards were forbidden to cross the half court line.
The DSC Lady Hornets basketball team played a limited number of games, as there were few women's teams. The military air force bases, such as Dover and McGuire had teams the Lady Hornets played.
Ladies basketball was the only women's athletic team on the DSC campus. The military bases had women's teams as did the YMCA. Members of the Lady Hornets, if they wanted to pursue basketball would have to play on one of those teams.
