Hornets fall in battle with Buccaneers

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The Delaware State University baseball team dropped the series finale to Charleston Southern University, 7-6 on Sunday.

After entering the top of the third down by three, Delaware State rallied to tie the game up at 3. The Hornets used a sacrifice fly from Tre'Zhan Selby, the first homerun of the season from Alan Alonso and an RBI-double from Alec Rodriguez that scored Trey Paige to even the game.

One half inning later, Charleston Southern took another three-run lead to go up 6-3 after three complete innings.

Facing another deficit, this time in the top of the fourth inning, Delaware State would tie the game up again. With runners on, Paige answered his call by way of a two-run double into the gap at right center that brought home Mike Worthington and Mason Brewer. One batter later, Krew Bouldin grounded out to the shortstop but not before Alonso was able to come across to bring the game to 6 apiece.

In the bottom of the sixth, Charleston Southern centerfielder Connor Carter secured the win and the series sweep with a solo homerun over the right field fence.

Paige paced the offense with a pair of RBIs and hits for Delaware State in the leadoff position. He also drew a walk bringing his total of times on base to three for the afternoon. Alonso, who batted second in today's game, also recorded a pair of hits and a pair of runs scored.

Delaware State will be back in action this weekend for a three-game series with Lehigh University beginning Friday. First pitch from Bob Reed Field located on DSU Downtown's campus is scheduled for 2 p.m.
