Feb. 12 (Washington, D.C.) --- Delaware State led for the first time in the game midway through the second half, but Howard responded with a big surge to highlight its 85-72 win over the Hornets in a MEAC contest at Burr Gym today.
The Bison won their fourth straight and fifth in the last six games to improve to 12-10 overall and 5-3 in the MEAC. The Hornets dropped their 17
th in a row to fall to 2-19 and 0-8. Howard also completed a two-game regular season sweep of the Hornets.
The loss overshadowed another stellar performance by Delaware State senior guard
Myles Carter, who tied his career-high with 25 points to lead the Hornets. Carter was 10-for-13 from the field, including two three pointers on two attempts, and perfect shooting on three free throws.
He also led the Hornets with seven rebounds, and tallied three assists and two steals in the game.
In addition, Carter's performance raised his career point total to 945.
John Stansbury added 13 points (4-8 FG; 4-6 3pt FG), while
D'Marco Baucum had 12 (5-7 FG) and
Corey Perkins 11 (4-5 FG) for the Hornets.
Howard's Kyle Foster, the MEAC's second leading scorer entering the game, scored a game-high 27 points, Steve Settle III added 15, while Elijah Hawks and Randall Brumant added 13 points each.
The Bison led by as many as points in the first half, and held a 41-32 lead at the break.
Howard led 43-36 before the Hornets embarked on a run.
Delaware State outscored the Bison 20-10 over the next seven minutes, and led for the first time in the game, 52-51, on a three-pointer by Carter with 11:19 left to play.
The Hornets led 54-53 on a jumper by Perkins before Howard regained control.
The Bison scored the next 12 points, nine by Foster, and opened up a 65-54 lead when he nailed a three-pointer with 8:38 left to play.
Delaware State could get no closer than give points the rest of the way.
The Hornets hit 28 of their 49 shots in the game (57.1%), including 10 of 15 on three-point shots (66.7%).
Delaware State also outrebounded Howard 31-28, but the Hornets were plagued by 28 turnovers, compared to 15 for Howard.
The Hornets return to action on Monday at home against Norfolk State. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., followed by the Delaware State/NSU women's contest in Memorial Hall.
