Dover, Del. (Dec. 3, 2022) --- Longwood scored 25 straight points during a more than eight-minute stretch of the second half to highlight its 75-49 victory over Delaware State in Memorial Hall today. The Lancers won for the second time in the last three games to improve to 5-4, while the Hornets dropped their sixth straight to fall to 1-7.
DeShaun Wade led three double-figure scorers for Longwood with a game-high 21 points on seven-for-12 shooting from the field, including four-of-six on three-point shots, and three free throws on three attempts.
Martaz Robinson was Delaware State's high scorer with 12 points. Robinson was five-for-seven from the field, including two-for-two on three-point shots. Aaron Lemon-Warren came off the bench to add a season-high 11 points for the Hornets on four-for-seven shooting, highlighted by three three-pointers on four tries.
Delaware State only trailed 34-31 after Corey Perkins hit a free throw at the 2:50 mark of the first half, but Longwood scored the last four points of the half to lead 38-31 at the break.
The Hornets pulled to within 43-39 on a follow-up dunk by Ray Somerville with 14:07 left in the second half, but were scoreless over the next eight-plus minutes as the Lancers took control.
The Longwood rally began with a lay-up by Walyn Napper to give his team a 45-39 lead, and ended with a basket by Michael Christmas to stretch the Lancers' advantage to 68-39 with 5:48 left to play.
Aaron-Warren ended the Longwood spurt with a jumper with 5:23 remaining.
Delaware State was outscored 37-18 in the second half.
Longwood shot 54.3 percent for the game, connecting on 25 of 46 shots from the field, including nine of 20 from beyond the arc (45%).
Delaware State was 18 for 53 from the field (34%) for the game.
Then Hornets return to action on Wed. Dec. 7) with the First State Rivalry contest at the University of Delaware. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Carpenter Center in Newark. Delaware State is back home on Dec. 10 against Georgian Court. The start time for the contest has been moved to 3:30 p.m. The game will also be televised live on HBCU.go TV.
