LATE RALLY KEYS WAGNER PAST HORNETS

Dover, Del. (Dec. 20, 2022) --- Wagner scored the last nine points of the game to post a hard-fought 58-51 victory over Delaware State in Memorial Hall this evening. The Seahawks won their second game in a row to improve to 6-4 this season, while the Hornets dropped their 10th straight to fall to 1-11. Delaware State led 51-49 when Brandon Stone knocked down a three-point field goal with 2:27 left to play. After Brandon Brown hit a free throw to pull Wagner to within a point, Delonnie Hunt hit a lay-up off a Hornet turnover to give the Seahawks the lead for good, 52-51, with 1:41 remaining. Wagner scored on its next position to pull ahead 54-51, and hit four free throws in the final 19 seconds to seal the win.    
The loss overshadowed a solid performance by Delaware State's Stone, who led al players with 23 points on nine-for-14 shooting from the field, including two three-pointers on five attempts. Hornet forward Kyle Johnson also had a strong game, tallying 10 points, and season-highs of 10 rebounds and five blocks. The blocks were the most by a Hornet since Chris Sodom had a school-record nine vs. Morgan State last season.
Hunt was high scorer for Wagner with 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including four-of-six from three-point range. Brown contributed 15 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, including six on the offensive board.
There were 13 lead changes and 11 ties in the game. Wagner was ahead by as many as seven points in the first half, and held a 28-25 lead at the break. Delaware State's biggest lead was three points, 38-35, after Jevin Muniz (7 points) hit two free throws at the 12:15 mark of the second half.
Delaware State returns to action on Dec. 29 at Penn State (2:00 p.m.) in its final tune-up before beginning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
