Dover, Del. (Nov. 30, 2022) --- The Delaware State women's basketball team takes on defending Colonial Athletic Association champ and state rival Delaware Wed. evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Carpenter Center in Newark.
The Lady Hornets have won two of their last three games to stand at 2-4 this season. Delaware State is coming off a 60-51 loss to Loyola (Md.) last weekend. After being outscored 20-12 in the first 10 minutes, the Lady Hornets won the second quarter 14-9 to pull to within 29-26 at the break. Loyola led 47-34 after three quarters, but Delaware State scored 15 of the first 23 points to start the final quarter, and only trailed 54-49 when
Savannah Brooks hit one-of-two free throws with 1:10 left to play. The Greyhounds responded with a three-point basket and hit three of four free throws in the final minute to seal the win.    Â
Alexis Moragne (jr.) led a balanced Delaware State score sheet with 13 points, including two three-pointers at Loyola, while
Denijsha Wilson added 12 points, Brooks had 11 and Tyshonne Tollie 10 for the Lady Hornets. Tollie was four-for-five from the field and perfect on two free throws in the contest.
Wilson is Delaware State's scoring leader this season at 8.0 points per game. She also has a team-high 16 assists. Brooks is second on the Lady Hornets with a 7.4 point per-game average, while Moragne is third at 7.2 pg. Tollie tops the team in rebounding (6.8 pg) and ranks fifth in scoring (6.2 ppg). She has 23 offensive rebounds among her total of 34 through the Lady Hornets' six games.  Â
Delaware State's other losses this season are to Michigan State, Michigan and Hampton, while the Lady Hornets have wins over Wilmington (Del.) and New Jersey City University.
Delaware (4-2) is coming off an 83-80 victory over the University of Illinois of the Big 10 Conference at the 2022 Daytona Beach Invitational in Florida. Makayla Pippin (18) and Klarke Sconiers (18) combined for 36 of the Blue Hens' point total in the contest. Pippin also pulled down a career-best 18 rebounds.
For the season, Sconiers is the team scoring leader at 11.2 points per game. Pippin is second on the Hens in scoring (11.0 ppg) and leads the club in rebounding with a 9.5 per-game average.Â
This is the 14th all-time meeting between the Hornets and Hens. Delaware holds a 12-1 lead in the series. The Hens won the last meeting 79-48 on Nov. 19, 2021 at Delaware State. The Lady Hornets won their only game in the series, 67-64, the last time the teams played at the Carpenter Center on Nov. 12, 2019.
