FAST START NOT ENOUGH FOR LADY HORNETS IN LOSS TO HENS

Box Score Newark, Del. (Nov. 30, 2022) --- The Delaware State women's basketball team started quickly, but couldn't sustain the momentum in a  74-52 loss to Delaware at the Carpenter Center this evening. The Lady Hornets dropped their second game in a row to fall to 2-5 on the season, while the Hens won their second straight to improve to 5-2.
Delaware State seized control of the game right from the start, scoring on its first two possessions on a jumper by Denijsha Wilson and a follow-up basket by Ty Tollie to grab a 4-0 lead. After a basket by Delaware, the Lady Hornets scored the next seven points to stretch their lead. Jessica Martino capped off the spurt with a fast break lay-up to give Delaware State an 11-2 advantage at the 5:03 mark of the first quarter.
After Delaware scored its second basket, the Lady Hornets answered with buckets by Martino and Savannah Brooks to open up their biggest lead of the game, 15-4, with 2:56 to go in the quarter.
Delaware State only allowed two more baskets by the Hens in the first quarter to maintain a lead, 15-8, after the first 10 minutes.    
Delaware fought back in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Hornets 27-13, to hold a 35-28 lead at the break. The Hens hit nine of their 17 shots from the field (52.9%), including five of 11 on three-point attempts (45.5%), in the second quarter.
UD broke the game open by outscoring the Lady Hornets 27-9 in the third quarter to lead 62-37.
Wilson led three double-figure scorers for Delaware State with 15 points, highlighted by seven for eight shooting at the free throw line. Tollie added 14 points (6-11 FG) and Savannah Brooks chipped in with 10 points.
Jewel Smalls led Delaware with a game-high 18 points. Each of her six baskets were three-point shots (6-12).
The Lady Hornets return to action this Saturday (Dec. 3) at the University of West Virginia. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Morgantown, W.V. Delaware State is back home on Dec. 18 against Hofstra (1:00 p.m.)
