Hornets visit Bears and host Eagles in weekly MEAC matchups

DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State women's volleyball team will pay a visit to the Bears of Morgan State University and then host the Eagles of Coppin State University in this week's slate of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchups.

Delaware State earned two more MEAC wins last week, both by shutout fashion over North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State University to improve to 18-6 overall and 8-3 in MEAC competition.

The Hornets were led last week by Valeria Otero and Alondra Maldonado. Otero recorded a team-high 25.5 points by way of 21 kills, three service aces one solo block and one assisted block. Maldonado also eclipsed the 20-point mark as she notched 20 kills and five assisted blocks for a total of 22.5 points.

Defensively, Delaware State held both teams to an average hitting percentage of .034% while only conceding a total of 37 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Kelsie Dawson led the way individually with one solo block and five assisted blocks for a total of a team-high six total blocks. Sydney Lewis handed out a team-best two solo blocks and joined in on three assisted blocks for five total blocks last week.

As for this week, Delaware State will look to complete the regular season sweep over Morgan State while attempting to even the series with Coppin State.

The Hornets will turn to Otero, Maldonado and Karen Cordero who led the team offensively during these matchups earlier in the season.

Cordero recorded a team-best 30.5 points across these two games after notching 23 kills, a team-high seven service aces and one assisted block. Maldonado chipped in with a team-high 24 kills, one solo block and a pair of assisted blocks for a total of 26.0 points. Otero joined in with 22 kills, one service ace and one assisted block giving her 23.5 points.

Lewis was dominant defensively in these two games racking up eight of the team's 14 total blocks (3 BS, 5 BA) and with 12 kills and four service aces, she contributed 21.5 points.

With Morgan State looking to avoid being swept by Delaware State, the Bears will turn to junior outside hitter Makila Billingsley to get Morgan State back in the win column. Billingsley leads her team in points (204.0) scoring 2.55 points per set and kills (188) landing 2.35 kills per set.

After Friday's match, Delaware State will return to Memorial Hall to host the Eagles of Coppin State University who enter this week's matches with a six-game win streak and sit atop the MEAC standings with a 10-1 mark in league action.

During those six games, graduate student outside hitter Ammaarah Williams has led the way for the Eagles with a total of 87.5 points powered by a team-high 72 kills, averaging 3.65 points per set and an even 3.00 kills per set. Andrea Tsvetanova, the league's top setter, has handed out 222 assists for an average of 8.88 assists per set to ensure everyone in an Eagle uniform has a chance to contribute.

As a team, Coppin State is holding its opponents to an average hitting percentage of .141 only allowing one team to eclipse a .300 team hitting percentage which was North Carolina Central back on October 23 when the Eagles hit .301.

Cordero, Lewis, Maldonado and Otero all notched double-digit point performances during the five-set loss to Coppin State earlier this year and will look to achieve the same personal results while attempting to change the game result and get a win over Coppin State.

First serve from the Hill Field House is currently scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday with first serve from Memorial Hall currently scheduled for 3 p.m.
