Dover, Del. (Nov. 12, 2022) – Morgan State's defense and special teams scored two touchdowns each, while its offense chipped in a touchdown to highlight the Bears' 37-7 victory over Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Alumni Stadium today.
The Hornets dropped their third game in the four outings to fall to 5-5 overall and finish their MEAC schedule with a 2-3 league record. Morgan State has won two of its last three games to improve to 4-6 and 2-2.
In addition to the two touchdowns, the Bears' defense recorded nine sacks, and held the Hornets to just 81 yards of total offense. Delaware State lost 63 yards on the Morgan State sacks, contributing to the Hornets' team total of minus-1 on the ground.
The Hornets were also plagued by five turnovers, including four lost fumbles.
Morgan State opened the scoring before taking an offensive snap when Hosea Robinson blocked a kick by Hornet punter
Matt Noll, scooped up the ball and ran 26 yards to the endzone following Delaware State's first possession just 3-minutes-38 seconds into the contest. The extra point kick was unsuccessful.
Delaware State took advantage of Morgan State's lone turnover in the game to grab the lead early in the second quarter.
Three plays after recovering a fumble by the Bears, quarterback
C.J. Henry connected with wide receiver Bizzett Woodley, who made a one-handed catch near the corner of the endzone, on a 12-yard pass to tie the score. The extra point kick by
Nathan Wilson gave the Hornets a 7-6 advantage with 12:16 to go in the second quarter.
The Bears regained the lead, 9-7, when Larry Beckett nailed a 23-yard field goal with 2:31 to go before halftime.
Morgan State capitalized on a late first-half turnover by the Hornets to stretch its lead. Five plays after recovering a fumble on a scramble by Henry, Duce Taylor connected hit Joseph Owumi for a 16-yard touchdown pass just 29 seconds before the break. The extra point kick put the Bears in front 16-7 at intermission.
Morgan State began the second half with a bang when Keith Jenkins, Jr. returned the kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to give the Bears a 23-7 lead after the extra point.
The MSU defense got into the scoring act when Carlvainsky Decius intercepted a pass by Henry and scampered 37 yards to the endzone at the 3:24 mark of the third quarter.
Delaware State allowed the Bears to score a second defensive touchdown in the game when second string quarterback
Marqui Adams mishandled a snap in the endzone that was recovered by Morgan's Devon Hebron with 13:48 left to play.
The Hornet defense allowed just 225 total yards, 137 by the pass and 88 on the ground.
Linebackers
Brooks Parker and
Maurio Goings led the defensive effort with six tackles each. Parker had four solo stops, including two sacks, and a pass break-up, while Going recorded five unassisted tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage.
The Hornets will close out the 2022 season at home against Campbell University of the Big South Conference next Sat. (Nov. 19). Game time is set for 2:02 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. Delaware State needs a win in the contest to post its first winning record since 2012 (6-5).
