Baltimore, Md. (Jan. 30, 2022) --- Delaware State led by as many as eight points in the first half and by three at the break, but faltered in the final 20 minutes of an 82-70 MEAC loss to Morgan State today.
The loss overshadowed a record-setting performance by Hornet 7-3 center
Chris Sodom (jr.), who blocked nine shots, the most in a game in team history. The previous record was eight, most recently by Kendall Gray during the 2014-15 season. Â Sodom also tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds.
The Bears snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in the MEAC, while the Hornets dropped their 13
th in a row to fall to 2-15 and 0-4.
Malik Miller came off the bench to lead four Morgan State double-figure scorers with 15 points. Lagio Grantsaan added 14 points for the Bears.
Miller and Grantsaan also tied Sodom for game-high honors with nine rebounds.
Myles Carter led the Hornets with a game-high 24 points, one short of his season high. Carter was eight for 16 from the field, including two-of-three on three-point shots.
Dominik Fragala came off the bench to add 15 points for Delaware State. His performance was highlighted by three three-point field goals (3-5).
Freshman guard
Corey Perkins also came off the bench to chip in 11 points and led the Hornets with four assists. Perkins had missed the previous three games due to an injury.
Delaware State started quickly in the contest, opening up a 10-2 on two free throws by
Martaz Robinson at the 16:25 mark of the first half.
Morgan State scored 23 of the next 24 points over the next seven-plus minutes, and opened up a 25-11 lead on a three-pointer by Isaiah Burke with 9:07 left in the half.
The Hornets responded with a 24-8 run, and regained the lead 34-33 on a three-pointer and free throw by Fragala with 1:53 to go before halftime.
Delaware State led 39-36 at the break.
The teams played even throughout the minutes of the second half.
The opened up a 49-44 lead on a basket by Perkins with 12:59 to play.
Morgan State scored the next 12 points, and opened up a 56-49 lead on two free throws by Miller with 10:08 left.
The Bears led by 11 points twice in the second half.
The Hornets are right back in action on Monday evening (Jan. 31) at home against Coppin State. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall
