HORNETS DROP MEAC HOME OPENER TO NCCU 73-49

Dover, Del. (Jan. 22, 2022) --- Randy Miller led three North Carolina Central double-figure scorers with a game-high 22 points in the Eagles' wire-to-wire 73-49 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Delaware State in Memorial Hall this after.
NCCU, playing for the first time since Dec. 21, improved to 7-9 overall and 1-0 in the MEAC.
Delaware State dropped its 11th straight game to fall to 2-13 and 0-2.
Myles Carter was high scorer for the Hornets with 13 points, while Dominik Fragala came off the bench to add 10 points.
The game was close throughout much of the first half.
Delaware State scored five straight points on a three-pointer by Fragala and a lay-up by Carter to cut the Eagles lead to 18-14 with 7:56 left in the opening frame.
Delaware State only trailed 22-18 before the Eagles scored five in a row to open up a 27-18 advantage.
NCCU led 33-26 at the break.
The Hornets trailed by double-figures for the first time, 36-26, on a free throw by Dontavious King with 19:35 left to play.
Delaware State was only down 40-36 before the Eagles embarked on a 16-3 run to take control of the game for good.
Marque Maultsby capped off the run with a lay-up to give NC Central a 56-39 lead with 8:27 left to play.
Delaware State could get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
North Carolina Central shot 51.2% for the game, connecting on 21 of 41 shots from then field. The Eagles also shot 84.8 percent from the free throw line in the game (28-for-33).
Delaware State hit 16 of its 46 shots from the floor (34.8%), including three of 12 on three-point shots (25%). The Hornets took 17 free throws, hitting 14 (82.4%.
This was NCCU's second victory over Delaware State this season. The Eagles were 86-53 winners over the Hornets in a non-conference game at the HBCU Legacy Classic on Dec. 18 in Newark, N.J.
The teams a are scheduled to meet again on Feb. 19 in Durham, N.C.  
Delaware State continued its homestand on Monday (Jan. 24) against South Carolina State. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
Spectators will not be permitted to attend the game due to University Covid health & safety protocols.
