Norfolk, Va. (Sep. 26, 2021) --- The 2021 Delaware State volleyball team set a new school record with its 10
th straight win today, topping Norfolk State 3-0 in a MEAC match at Echols Hall. The scores were 25-17, 25-9 and 25-19. The previous team record of nine wins in a row was held by the Hornets' 1986 MEAC championship club.
DSU's season record now stands at 14-1, the best mark after 15 matches in team history. The Hornets have won by 3-0 scores eight times and won 30 of 32 sets during the win streak.
Delaware State is also 2-0 to begin MEAC play for the first time since the 2010 season.
DSU has 10 shutout wins and is 43-7 in sets played this year.
In today's match,
Alondra Maldonado led all players with a career-high 18 kills on 27 attacks for a .667 hitting percentage. Maldonado also contributed six digs and three blocks to the win.
Newcomer
Karen Cordero was second on the Hornets with 12 kills on 21 attempts (.476), while also tallying five digs and two aces.
DSU's
Malgorzata Andersohn topped all players with 23 assists and posted a team-high 13 digs.
Jasmal Cruz was second on the Hornets with 12 digs.
The first set was tied at 10 before the Hornets scored five straight points to take control.
Delaware State opened up its biggest lead, 22-13, on a kill by
Mayah Ngundam off a feed from Ayana Lacy.
The Hornets clinched the set on a kill by Cordero with the assist to
Valeria Otero.
DSU was in control from start to finish in set two. The Hornets opened up a 7-1 lead on a kill by
Adriana Rodriguez and stretched their advantage to 16-7 on a winner by Otero.
Delaware State used an 8-0 run to open up a 24-8 lead and clinched the second set on a kill by Maldonado.
The Hornets posted a .536 hitting percentage in the second set, tallying 16 kills and just one error on 28 attacks.
Maldonado dominated the third set with eight kills without an error in 11 attacks (.727), while Cordero had four kills, two aces and two digs in set three.
The Hornets had 46 kills and season-low nine errors on 95 attacks for a .389 hitting percentage in the match. DSU's previous low for errors this season was 11 in the opener against St. Peter's on Aug. 27.
Norfolk State recorded a .096 hitting percentage in the match with 22 kills and 13 errors on 94 attempts.
The Hornets will look for their 11
th straight win in the next contest this Fri. (Oct. 1) at home against Maryland-Eastern Shore. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
