Dover, Del. (Aug. 27. 2021) --- The Delaware State volleyball team won its season opener for the first time since the 2000 season, posting a 3-0 victory over St. Peter's in the opening match of the Delaware State Invitational in Memorial Hall on Friday.
The sores were 25-18, 25-17 and 25-16.
The win was Delaware State's first in a season opening math since a 3-0 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Aug. 31, 2000.
Valeria Otero topped all players with 11 kills on 21 attempts (.476), while
Alondra Maldonado tallied 10 winners on 18 attacks (.500) to lead the Hornets.
Kristi Gomez contributed eight kills and a math-high six aces in the contest.
Jelena Dukic dished out 20 assists, while
Alayna Lacy came off the bench to contribute 16. Gomez was tops in the MEAC with 45 aces (0.76 per set) in the spring 2021 season.

Maria Caratini led all players with 11 digs.
Delaware State held the Peahens to a .114 attack percentage for the match, giving up just 23 kills on 79 attempts. St. Peter's also committed 14 attack errors in the contest.
The Hornets posted a .365 hitting percentage, totaling 46 kills and just 11 errors on 96 attacks.
Delaware State will face St. Francis Brooklyn and Bucknell in tournament action on Saturday. The Hornets will play at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to close out the tourney.
