HORNETS DROP THIRD STRAIGHT TO EAGLES IN HOME FINALE

Dover, Del. (May 2, 2021) --- Coppin State's Mike Dorcean and Grant Williams drove in three runs each, and the Eagles took advantage of extra base runners in a 12-8 victory over Delaware State in the finale of a four-game MEAC North series at Soldier Field today.
CSU won the last three games of the series to improve to 10-25 overall and 7-16 in the MEAC. The Hornets fell to 13-20 and 11-12 in league games.
Cole Garey was three-for-five with a home run and four runs batted in, while Jared Gillis had two hits, including a homer, and two RBI to lead the Hornets.
Delaware State committed four errors, while the pitching staff walked 15 batters and hit six others.
The Hornets opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning when Garey singled with two outs and Gillis followed with his first home run of the season.
The score was 2-2 when Garey doubled in a run in the third to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead.
The Eagles answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to open up a 6-3 lead. Dorcean's two-run single was the big hit in the inning.
Delaware State scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, aided by three CSU errors,  to tie the game at 6-6.
Dorcean led off the sixth inning with a home run to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead. Coppin State added two more runs in the sixth to stretch its lead to 9-6.
Garey hit a two run homer in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Hornets to within 9-8.
The Eagles picked up an insurance run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to close out the scoring.
Tim Ruffino pitched sixth innings to earn the win, while Matt Perkins threw three scoreless innings in relief to pick up a save for Coppin State.
The Hornets return to action with a four-game series at North Carolina Central next weekend (May 7-9) in Durham, N.C.
