DELAWARE STATE ANNOUNCES 2021 ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME CLASS

Dover, Del. (May 15, 2021) --- Delaware State's first All-America bowler, second all-time leading rusher and two MEAC championship coaches highlight the school's 2021 Athletics Hall-of-Fame class.
A total of 11 individuals will be honored during the annual hall-of-fame ceremony scheduled for Sep. 3, 2021.  The class will also be recognized during the Hornets' home football contest against Bowie State the following day.
The Hornets' 2021 Hall-of-Fame class includes bowling great Angela Reynolds ('10), a 2008-09 National Tenpin Coaches Association All-America Second Team selection (top 10), two-time All-MEAC First Team honoree and  2010 MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Performer. Reynolds also helped lead the Hornets to two MEAC championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances.
Reggie Barnes, number two in team history and 12th on the MEAC all-time list with 3,282 career rushing yards, has also been selected for hall-of-fame induction. Barnes posted the second-best single-season rushing total in team history with 1,336 yards in 10 games in 1988 and fourth-best single game performance (233 yards). A two-time All-MEAC First Team performer, he was a member of DSU's 1985, '87 and '88 MEAC championship teams.
Former Delaware State coaches Mary "Honey" Lamb-Bowman and Harry Van Sant have also been selected for hall-of-fame induction.
Lamb-Bowman, a two-sport coach, led the Hornets' volleyball program to its lone MEAC championship in 1986, also earning league coach-of-the-year honors that season. She led the team to a school-record 23 wins (23-6) and second straight MEAC regular season title, in addition to earning her second MEAC Coach-of-the year award in 1987.  As head coach of the Lady Hornets' basketball program, she's No. 2 on the all-time list with 112 wins, a two-time MEAC Coach-of-the-Year and led the team to two MEAC championship game appearances.
Van Sant served 14 seasons as head coach of the Hornets' baseball program (1985-98). He led Delaware State to its lone MEAC championship in 1989, defeating Howard 17-2 in the title game. His '89 squad was also tops in the NCAA with a team-record .389 batting average. His 1988, '91 and '93 teams also reached the MEAC Tournament championship series. Van Sant is second on the Hornets' baseball career list with 223 wins, including a 123-93 record in MEAC regular season games.
One of Van Sant's star players, Ronald Probst, is also a member of the 2021 DSU Hall of Fame class. Probst, a career .397 hitter, was fourth among all NCAA Div. I players with a .457 batting average in 1989 and a .446 mark in 1988. He's also fourth in team history with 57 stolen bases and fifth on the Hornets' single-season list with 25 steals in 1989. Probst was also a member of Delaware State's 1989 MEAC championship squad.
The Delaware State baseball program is also represented by pitching great Tim Vaillancourt in the 2021 hall of fame class. When Vaillancourt's DSU career ended, he was team's all-time leader in wins (25), second in strikeouts (246), second in complete games (17), third in shutouts (4) and second in inning pitched (287.2). He set a school record with 14 strikeouts in DSU's  4-1 victory over Delaware in 2003 and helped lead the Hornets to four consecutive MEAC Northern Division titles. Vaillancourt played professionally in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization after being drafted by the team in 2003.
Former football standouts Malcolm Showell (posthumous), Nate Dancy,  Timothy King and Sam Smith have also been selected for hall of fame induction.
Showell was a two-time All-MEAC First Team defensive lineman. He ranks second in team history and seventh all-time in the MEAC with 30.5 career sacks. He was tops in the MEAC with 14 sacks in the Hornets' 1989 conference championship season. A  1989 HBCU All-America, Showell competed in the NFL for the Los Angeles Raiders (1990), Green Bay Packers (1991) and Arizona Cardinals (1992), as well as the Canadian Football League and World League of American Football.
Dancy was a fierce competitor in the defensive backfield for the Hornets in the early to mid-1970s. A 1974 All-MEAC First Team selection, he totaled more than 200 tackles in his Delaware State career.  In 1973, he recorded 82 tackles and four interceptions, and led the Hornets in kickoff and punt return yardage.
King was a 1981 All-MEAC First Team selection (DB) after leading the Hornets with 96 tackles, four interceptions and 11 pass break-ups. In 1980, he was the team leader with 104 tackles (43 solo) and five interceptions (70 return yards). A 1981 Black College All-Star selection, he played three years with Tampa Bay Bandits of United States Football League following his Delaware State career.
Smith was two-time All-MEAC First Team selection (DB 2004; LB – 2005), 2005 Don Hansen I-AA First Team All-America, Associated Press Third Team All-America and HBCU First Team All-America. He was the MEAC leader and No. 2 in Division I-AA with 13.5 sacks in 2005 (third best in DSU history), tied for 7th in Div. I-AA with 19 tackles-for-loss and MEAC leader with four fumble recoveries in 2005. Smith was a five-time MEAC Defensive Player of the Week in 2005.  
Rounding out the Delaware State 2021 Hall of Fame class is basketball great Chavonne Stewart,  a member of Lady Hornets' "1000-point/500 rebound" club. Stewart is ninth in team history with 1,340 points and No. 10 on the school's career rebound list with 620. In addition, she's fifth all-time on DSU's steals list with 248. She was an All-MEAC First Team  and MEAC All-Tournament selection after leading Lady Hornets to 2000-01 MEAC championship game.
