Dover, Del. (Apr. 17, 2021) --- The Delaware State baseball team has secured at least a tie in its four-game MEAC weekend series against North Carolina Central after a 3-2 win in game two of a doubleheader today.
NCCU took game one of the twin-bill 9-3.
DSU starting pitcher
Jordan Haddaway earned the win in game two after tossing 5.2 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three.
The Hornets managed just three hits in the nightcap, two by
Trey Paige.
Delaware State opened the game two scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning.
John Weglarz drew a one-out walk and later crossed the plate with the first run of the game on a sac fly by
Krew Bouldin.
After the Eagles tied the game with a run in the second, the Hornets regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Paige doubled with one out and later scored on a wild pitch.
Paige singled in
Miguel Rivera in the fifth to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead.
North Carolina Central scored a run in the top of the seventh and had runners on second and third with two outs off DSU's
Chandler Fitzgerald, but the Hornet closer got out the jam by retiring the last out on a fly ball to center fielder
Mark Herron to end the game.
In Saturday's game one, NC Central tallied 10 hits, including two home runs, and Shawn Runey tossed a three-hit complete game to snap the Hornets' five-game win streak.
The Eagles led 4-0 before blowing the game open with five runs in the top of the seventh inning to open up a 9-0 lead.
Runey struck out eight batters and walked just one to earn the win.
Delaware State scored its runs on a three-run homer by
Cole Garey in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Hornets, who won the series opener on Friday, stand at 11-13 overall and 9-5 in the MEAC, after the doubleheader split.
