HORNETS POST EXTRA INNING WIN OVER SPARTANS IN SERIES OPENER

Norfolk, Va. (Apr. 1, 2021) --- Delaware State scored three runs with two outs in the top of the 11th inning to defeat Norfolk State 5-2 in the opener of a four-game MEAC North series at Marty Miller Field today.
The score had been tied at 2-2 since the Hornets scored a run in the top of the eighth inning.
Brady Daniels doubled to lead off the DSU 11th and Mark Herron was hit by a pitch to give the Hornets runners at second and first with none out. The runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Mason Brewer. The next batter, Tripp Kimmell, was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. The bases were still full with two outs when John Weglarz drew a walk to bring home Daniels and give the Hornets a 3-2 lead. Trey Paige followed with an infield single, with Herron scoring on the play to stretch the lead to 4-2. Krew Bouldin was then hit by a pitch to score Kimmell with the third DSU run of the inning.
In the Norfolk State 11th, the Spartans had runners on second and first with none out, and the bases loaded with two outs, but Hornet reliever Chandler Fitzgerald pitched out of the jam to earn his first save of the season.
Ethan Edelson pitched one scoreless inning in relief to record the win for the Hornets. DSU starter Cole Bates pitched the first nine innings in a masterful outing, allowing just six hits and two runs, one earned,  while striking out five without a walk.
Delaware State trailed 2-1 when Cole Garey doubled with one out in the eighth inning and Daniels drove in pinch runner Arthur Burrell on a groundout to tie the game.
DSU out hit Norfolk State 13-7 in the contest. Garey was four-four, while Weglarz had three hits, including a double, in four at bats to raise his season average to a MEAC- best .472 (25-for-53).
DSU improved to 5-10 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC, while Nofolk State fell to 7-16 and 3-2.
The Hornets and Spartans will face off in doubleheader on Friday and close out the series with a single game on Saturday.
