Dover, Del. (Mar. 26, 2021) --- The Delaware State volleyball team defeated MEAC rival Morgan State for the second night in a row, and third time this season, topping the Bears 3-0 at MSU's Hill Fieldhouse this evening. The scores were 25-20, 25-20 and 25-13.
The Hornets have won their last three matches to improve to 10-4 overall and 6-3 in the MEAC North. DSU has already clinched the No. 2 spot in the Northern Division race and a berth in the upcoming conference championship tournament.
Freshman Valerio Otero led Delaware State with 10 kills on 23 attacks (.348), while
Sydney Lewis (so.) had five kills on 11 attempts (.455), in addition to leading all players with 4.5 blocks, including three solo.
Libero Maria Caratini (fr.), filling in for injured starter
Jasmal Cruz (so.), had a match-high 11 digs.
Kristi Gomez (jr.) was second on the Hornets with eight kills, while
Mayah Ngundam (sr.) contributed seven kills (.385) and two block assists to the win.
DSU starting setter
Jelena Dukic (sr.) had a match-high 20 assists, while
Alayna Lacy (fr.) came off the bench to add 15 helpers, Â to go along with three aces to lead all players in the contest.
The Hornets posted a .321 hitting percentage and never trailed in the opening set.
Gomez had five kills, while Lewis and Ngundam added four each to lead DSU to the set two win.
Otero was the star of the third set, tallying five kills, two digs and a service ace to lead the way for the Hornets.
DSU recorded a.232 hitting percentage in the match, posting 38 kills and 16 errors on 95 attacks. Morgan State had 25 kills and 25 errors on 91 attempts for a .000 percentage.
The Hornets registered eight blocks, while Morgan State failed to record a block in the contest.
Delaware State swept the season series against Morgan State for the first time since 2010. Â
DSU will close out the spring 2021 regular season at Howard on Sunday (Mar. 28). The match is st for 2:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
