Baltimore, Md. (Mar. 19, 2021) --- The Delaware State volleyball team won the first set against MEAC North leader Coppin State for the second night in a row, but came up short in the match, suffering a 3-1 loss to the Eagles Friday evening. The Hornets won the first set 25-19, but Coppin State stormed back to take the next three sets 25-18, 25-22 and 25-14.
DSU fell to the Eagles for the second straight night, and third time this season, to stand at 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the MEAC North.
Coppin State won its seventh straight match to improve to 8-4 overall and 7-1 in division play.
Miajavon Coleman had a team-high 11 kills, while Chudear Tut posted 10 to lead the Eagles.
Mayah Ngundam (sr.) and
Valeria Otero (fr.) shared the Delaware State lead with 11 kills each. Otero also recorded 12 digs, her fourth match with double-figures in kills and digs this season.
Jasmal Cruz (so.) tallied a team-high 18 digs for DSU.
Otero had five kills and Ngundam four to lead the Hornets to their first set win. DSU never trailed in the set, although there were four ties. The Hornets led by six points on three occasions in the set, the last at 23-17 after a kill by Otero off of a feed by
Jelena Dukic.
Coppin State responded with a wire-to-wire victory in set two to even the match. The Eagles scored seven of the first eight points and led by as many as seven in the set.
The Eagles led two sets to one before sealing the victory with their set four victory. The Hornets were plagued by 10 errors in the fourth set and a season-high 32 for the match.
Delaware State had more kills (52-39), assists (50-38) and digs (61-53), but Coppin State committed just 16 errors to help key its victory.
The Hornets return to action with a home contest against Morgan State on Monday. Start time is 6:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
