HORNETS CRUSH THE MOUNT IN RECORD- SETTING SWEEP

Dover, Del. (Mar. 14, 2021) --- The Delaware State baseball team put on a school-record performance in collecting its first wins of the season today, sweeping a doubleheader from Mount St. Mary's 32-11 and 11-5.
While the 32 runs in the opener did not set a team record, the combined 43 runs in the doubleheader mark a new team high. Also, DSU set new records for hits in a game (28 in game one) and doubleheader (40), in addtion to runs in a three-game series (54).
Delaware State's record for runs in a game is 34, vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore in 2000.
The opener also marked the first time that four Hornets collected at least four hits in a game. Second baseman John Weglarz placed his name into the team record book with nine hits in the doubleheader. Weglarz was five-for-six with a home run, four singles and three RBI in game one. He tallied four hits, including a double, and drove in two more runs in the nightcap.
The performance raised his season average to .517 (15-for-29). Weglarz was hitting .333 entering today's doubleheader.
Miguel Rivera was five-for-seven at the plate, including a double, with two runs batted in in the opener.
Trey Paige had a homer, double, two singles and drove in two in seven at bats, while Tripp Kimmell contributed a home run, three singles and knocked in three in the opener.
The game was tied at 10 after four innings before the Hornets scored four runs in the fifth, eight in the sixth and 10 in the seventh to take a 32-10 lead.
Weglarz hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Mark Herron hit a solo shot in the third to give DSU a 4-2 lead.
Paige had a two-run double to highlight the Hornets' sixth-run fourth inning.
Delaware State's eight-run sixth inning featured a two-run bomb by Kimmell, Mike Worthington's two-run double and a two-run single by Herron.
The Hornets sent 12 batters to the plate in their 10-run seventh. Brady Daniels hit a three-run pinch hit homer and Paige followed with a solo shot, his third big fly in the first two games of the series.
Weglarz and Paige each had two hits in the DSU 10th.
In game two, the Hornets led 4-2 before scoring seven runs in the sixth to blow the game open.
Weglarz had two more hits and a RBI in the seventh, while Herron doubled in two and catcher Robert Trujillo singled in a run in the inning.
Rivera led off game two with a homer and Krew Bouldin hit a two-run shot in the inning to give the Hornets a 3-0 start.
Weglarz doubled in a run in the second to put DSU ahead 4-2.
The Hornets (2-5; 0-0 MEAC) will be home for the first time next weekend, hosting MEAC North rival Coppin State in a four-game series.  The teams are scheduled to play single games on Friday (Mar. 19) and Sunday (Mar. 21) and a doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 20).
