HORNETS POST BACK-TO-BACK SWEEPS OF BISON

Dover, Del. (Mar. 12,2021) --- `Delaware State used a balanced attack and 10 service aces to key its 3-0 MEAC North victory over Howard in  Memorial Hall Friday evening. The scores were 25-14, 25-18 and 25-19.
The Hornets recorded their second sweep of the Bison in two days to improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC.  DSU has won six of its last seven matches to post it best mark after eight matches since also starting 6-2 in 1989.
Sydney Lewis (so.) led the Hornets with eight kills to top all players. Lewis posted a .538 hitting percentage for the match, raising her season mark to .500 (49 kills/8 errors/82 attacks).
Mayah Ngundam (sr.) and Alondra Maldonado (fr.) were tied for second on the Hornets with seven kills each. Ngundam posted a .400 hitting percentage and led all players with three blocks (one solo) in the match.
Kristi Gomez (jr.) and Valeria Otero (fr.) contributed six kills each to the win. Gomez also topped all players with four aces, giving her nine in the last two matches and a team-high 22 for the season. She was tops in the MEAC in aces at 0.78 per set entering tonight's match.
In the opening set, Delaware State scored the first three points and opened up an 8-1 lead on an error by the Bison. The Hornets stretched their lead to double-figures, 21-11, on a kill by Erika Lindqvist off a feed from Alayna Lacy.
Lacy had 16 assists in the match, trailing only teammate Jelena Dukic's 17.
In the second set, Howard only trailed 19-18 before the Hornet scored the last six points to hold off the threat.
Gomez had five kills, two aces and two digs to highlight the third set for DSU.
Delaware State recorded a .333 attack percentage in the match, its second-best mark for the season. The Hornets posted 39 kills and just 11 errors on 84 attempts in the contest.
Howard collected 25 kills and 17 errors on 68 attacks for a .118 percentage.
The Hornets are back in action at home against Morgan State on Monday (Mar. 15).
