Dover, Del. (Nov. 5, 2021) ---The Delaware State volleyball team finished it's 2021 home schedule with a 13-0 record with its 3-0 MEAC victory over Morgan State in Memorial Hall this evening. The scores were 25-19, 25-17 and 25-15. The Hornets blanked the Bears for the second time this season to improve to 22-3 overall and 10-2 in the MEAC. DSU was tied with Howard for first place in the conference standings entering Friday's match.
Delaware State won 39 of 40 sets in its home matches this season.
The Hornets also posted their school-record 19
th shutout this season and moved to within one victory of tying the team record for wins in a season. The 1987 squad posted an overall record of 23-6.
This year's DSU squad has two regular season contests and the MEAC Tournament remaining on the schedule.
In tonight's match,
Alondra Maldonado led the Hornets with 10 kills, while
Mayah Ngundam, playing her final match in Memorial Hall, tallied nine winners without an error on 11 attacks (.818). Ngundam also had three blocks, one solo, in the contest.
DSU's
Sydney Lewis contributed seven kills on 11 attacks (.545 hitting pct.), to go along with five blocks.
Maldonado was second on the Hornets with four blocks.
Karen Cordero had eight kills and tied for match-high honors with nine digs in the contest.
Malgorzata Andersohn led the Hornets with 22 assists and contributed six digs to the win.
Delaware State posted a .366 hitting percentage in the match, tallying 44 kills and 10 errors on 93 attacks. The Hornets had a .417 percentage in the third set, highlighted by four kills from Ngundam.
DSU held Morgan State to a .118 percentage. The Bears had 29 kills and 19 errors on 85 attempts.
Morgan State fell to 5-21 overall and 3-9 in the MEAC.
MSU's Gabriella Hiciano led all players with 11 kills.
Delaware State will return to action on Sunday (Nov. 7) at Coppin State. Start time is 3:00. The Hornets will close out the regular season next Friday with a 2:00 p.m. match at Maryland-Eastern Shore.
