Dover, Del. (Nov. 12, 2021) ---Delaware State trailed by 20 points less than 11 minutes into the game and never recovered in a 91-78 loss to visiting Salisbury in Memorial Hall this evening.
Gary Briddell led four Seagull double-figure scorers with 25 points on seven-for-13 shooting from the field, including five three-pointers on nine attempts, and six-of-seven at the free throw line. Briddell also contributed eight rebounds and six assists. Â Â
Rob Goyena came off the bench to add 14 points, highlighted by four- of-six shooting on three-point shots, while fellow reserve Sidney Lebonzo tallied 12 for the Div. III Seagulls.
The Delaware State loss overshadowed a stellar performance by junior guard Domini Fragala, who led all players with a career-high 31 points. Fragala was 11 for 22 from the field, including four three-pointers. His former DSU high was 28 points vs. Coppin State on Feb. 28, 2021.
Freshman guard
Corey Perkins was second on the Hornets with 15 points and dished out a team-high four assists.
Salisbury was the aggressor early in the contest, darting out to a 29-9 lead after two free throws by Paul Garcia with 9:20 left in the first half.
The Seagulls opened up their biggest first half lead, 32-11, on a three-ball by Lebonzo with 8:51 to go before halftime.
Salisbury led 43-26 at the break.
The Hornets faced their biggest deficit, 67-39, after two free throws by Bridell with 12:46 left to play before rallying to get to within 12.
Chris Sodom capped off a 16-0 Delaware State run with a shot in the lane to cut the Seagulls' lead to 67-55 with 7:40 left in the game.
Salisbury ended the DSU threat by scoring the next four points and the Hornets could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
The Seagulls were 31 for 63 from the field (49.2%), including 15 of 38 on three-point shots (39.5%).
Delaware State shot 29% from the field overall for the game (30-for-73) and just five of 21 from beyond the arc (23.8%).
Salisbury also won the rebound battle 44-36.
The Hornets (1-1) will play their first road game of the season on Sunday (Nov. 14) at Rider. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Lawrenceville, N.J.
