RECORD-SETTING 2ND QTR. KEYS HORNETS IN ROUT OF DRAGONS

Dover, Del. (Oct. 9, 2021)--- Delaware State scored a school-record 42 points in the second quarter to highlight a 56-6  victory over Virginia University of Lynchburg at Alumni Stadium today. The Hornets notched their second win in a row for the first time since 2018 to improve to 3-3 this season. The Dragons, members of the National Christian College Athletic Association, fell to 0-6.
Running back Sy'Veon Wilkerson cracked the 100-yard mark for the second game in row with 101 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while quarterback Jared Lewis completed eight-of-14 passes for 125 yards and two TDs in a little more than two quarters of play. Lewis has thrown six scoring passes in the last two games. Michael Chris-Ike came off the bench to rush for 102 yards and two touchdowns.Chris-Ike was also part of the last Delaware State duo to rush for 100 yards in a game. He ran for 127 and Brycen Alleyne added 122 in the Hornets' 28-13 victory over North Carolina Central in 2018.   
The Hornets outgained VUL 460-172. DSU posted season-highs of 258 yards rushing and 202 yards passing.
Jawain Granger had four solo tackles, an interception, two sacks and a forced fumble to lead Delaware State's defensive effort.
The heavily-favored Hornets failed to score on two first quarter possessions, but more than made up for it with the second quarter outburst.
Delaware State reached the end zone on each of its six second quarter possessions.
The scoring began when Wilkerson capped off a seven-play, 53-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter. The two-minute-56-second possession was highlighted by 19 and 16 yard runs by Wilkerson.
After a short VUL punt, the Hornets opened up a two-touchdown lead on its next possession when  Chris-Ike scored on a three-run. The extra point kick by Jake Bridel gave DSU a 14-0 advantage with 12:00 left in the second quarter.
DSU took advantage of a lost fumble by the Dragons  to set up its third touchdown. Wilkerson added his second TD of the game to the scoring barrage on an eight-yard run with 8:30 left in second quarter.
The Hornets again capitalized on a short field after another lost fumble by the Dragons for their next touchdown. Lewis capped off the four-play, 21-yard drive with a one yard plunge to the end zone for DSU's fourth touchdown of the quarter.
After the Hornet defense forced a three-and-out by the Dragons, the offense struck again.
Lewis and Trey Gross connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass for DSU's fifth touchdown in the quarter. Gross has a touchdown catch in each of the last three games, and 21 for his career to rank fifth in team history. Bridel's extra point kick gave Delaware State a 35-0 lead with 2:03 to go before halftime.
The Hornets had one more possession in the second quarter and again hit pay dirt. Lewis hit Bizzett Woodley on a 41-yard yard touchdown with seven seconds left in the half.
Delaware State led 42-0 at the break.
The Hornets' previous record for points in a quarter was 30 vs. Arkansas Pine-Bluff in 1988.
Wade Inge scored on a 15-yard run and Chris-Ike added his second score of the game on an eight-yard carry in the second half for the Hornets.
DSU's 56 points were it most since a 58-12 win over Lincoln in 2019.
The Hornets begin Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play in its next game on Oct. 23 against preseason favorite South Carolina State.  Kick-off for the homecoming contest is set for 2:05 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
