Dover, Del. (Oct. 17, 2021) --- The Delaware State volleyball team's school-record win streak is now 16 with a 3-0 MEAC victory over Coppin State today, raising the Hornets' season total to 20 for the first time in 12 years. The scores were 25-14, 25-21 and 25-20.
DSU is now 20-1 overall and leads the MEAC with an 8-0 record. Delaware State has won its last seven matches by 3-0 scores and feature 17 shutout victories this season. During their 16-match win streak, the Hornets have 3-0 wins in 14 contests and taken 48 of 50 sets. Overall, the Hornets are 61-7 in sets played this year, including 24-1 in MEAC matches.
The Hornets have a .952 win percentage this season. DSU had the third best percentage in Division I entering the weekend, trailing only undefeated Louisville (16-0) and Texas 13-0). Â Â Â
Delaware State's 20 wins this season are the most since posting a 20-13 mark in 2009. The team record for wins in a season is 23 in 1987 (23-6).
The Hornets also improved to 12-0 at home this season.
Coppin State, the preseason MEAC favorite, fell to 10-9 overall and 4-3 in the MEAC.
In today's contest, freshman middle blocker
Kelsie Dawson had career-highs of seven kills and seven blocks, while outside hitter
Karen Cordero led all players with 11 kills and three aces to highlight the Hornets' victory.
Dawson had 11 attacks in the contest for a .545 hitting percentage. Three of her seven blocks were solo. The Hornets tallied 12 blocks in the match, tying for their third highest total of the season.
Alondra Maldonado had five block assists, while
Sydney Lewis posted three blocks, one solo. Â Â
Cordero led the Hornets in kills for the second straight match and fifth time this season.
DSU's
Alayna Lacy came off the bench to lead all players with 16 assists, while
Jasmal Cruz was tops on the Hornets with 11 digs. Â
Delaware State had 36 kills and 14 errors on 101 attacks for a .218 hitting percentage in the match. Coppin State recorded a .000 percentage, collecting 24 kills and 24 errors on 89 attempts.Â
The Hornets were No. 1 among all NCAA Division I teams with a .104 opponents hitting percentage entering this weekend's matches.
Delaware State is on the road for the next three matches, beginning with a rematch against Howard on Oct. 26 in Washington, D.C. The Hornets defeated the Bison 3-1 in the MEAC opener for each team on Sep. 24 in Dover, Del. Howard won the third set in the contest 25-14, DSU's only set loss against a MEAC opponent this season.
The Hornets will also visit North Carolina Central (Oct. 29) and South Carolina State (Oct. 31) before their final home match of the season against Morgan State on Nov. 5.
