Dover, Del. (Oct. 14, 2021) --- The streaking Delaware State women's volleyball team returns to action with two matches this weekend. The Hornets, winners of a school-record 14 straight matches, will visit MEAC rival Morgan State on Friday (Oct. 15) at 6:00 p.m. in Baltimore, Md., before returning home for a league contest against Coppin State on Sunday (3:00 p.m.).
Delaware State is 18-1 overall and leads the MEAC with a 6-0 record. Coppin State, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Howard and North Carolina Central are in a four-way tie for second place at 3-2.
The Hornets' 18 wins top all NCAA Division I teams and their .947 win percentage this season is third among all schools, trailing only undefeated Louisville (16-0) and Texas (13-0).
Additionally, Delaware State leads the nation in opponents' hitting percentage (.104) and aces per set (2.27), while ranking fourth in total aces (141 in 62 sets), sixth in assists per set (13.3), 11
th in kills per set (14.2) and 25
th in hitting percentage (.264).
The Hornets have won their last five matches by 3-0 scores and have 15 shutout wins this season.
DSU has won by 3-0 scores 12 times and taken 42 of 44 sets during the win streak. Overall, the Hornets are 55-7 in sets played this year, including 18-1 in MEAC matches.
Delaware State is also dominating MEAC statistical categories this season, topping the league in hitting percentage, opponents hitting percentage, assists, kills per set and blocks (2.06 per set).
Individually, DSU's
Malgorzata Andersohn is tops in the MEAC and third in Division I in aces per set (.73) and is tied for ninth in the nation with 35 service winners.
Delaware State's
Adriana Rodriguez is No. 1 in the MEAC and 13
th in the nation with a .421 hitting percentage, while
Kristi Gomez is third in the MEAC and 15
th nationally in aces per set (.53) and tied for 19
th with 30 total aces.
DSU also features the second and fourth best hitters by percentage in the MEAC.
Alondra Maldonado is No. 2 in the league with a .355 hitting percentage, while
Sydney Lewis is fourth in the league at .338. Lewis is also the No. 1 blocker in the MEAC at 1.13 per set (68 total).
Maldonado is also No. 2 in the MEAC in kills at 3.35 per set. DSU's
Valeria Otero is seventh at 2.83 and Gomez ranks 10
th at 2.48.
Malgorzata is also sixth in the MEAC in assists at 6.48 per set.
Rodriguez is No. 8 in the MEAC in blocks at 0.78 per set (38 total), while Maldonado is 10
th at 0.75 (43 total).
DSU's
Jasmal Cruz has climbed to fourth in the league in digs at 4.06 per set (215).
Morgan State has lost its last three matches and six of the last seven to stand at 3-16 overall and 1-4 in the MEAC this season. The Hornets swept three matches against the Bears in the spring, winning nine of 10 sets.
Coppin State, the 2021 preseason MEAC favorite, enters the weekend with a 9-8 overall record and 3-2 mark in league play. The Eagles swept three contests against the Hornets en route to winning the MEAC North title in the spring, including a 3-2 victory the last time the teams met in DSU's Memorial Hall.
