DSU LOSES A HEARTBREAKER IN CONFERENCE OPENER

Cold shooting once again plagues Delaware State 'Lady Hornets' as they lose 56-54 to the Coppin State 'Eagles' in the MEAC Conference Opener. The Lady Hornets once led by 12 points in the game. DSU falls to 1-3 on the season and starts MEAC play 0-1.

Delaware State shot just 22-of-68 (22.73%) from the field, a cold 2-of-17 (11.8%) on three-point attempts and just 8-of-12 from the free throw line (66.7%).

Lady Hornets guard Sharajah Collins had a chance to win the game, but her three-point attempt fell short, with 4.3 seconds left. Coppin State made one free throw and missed the second intentionally to end the game.

Coppin State guard Alexandria Hamilton spots forward Jalynda Sally open under the basket, she passes it to Sally who hits a layup to take a 55-54 lead with 12 seconds left in the game.

Collins gets fouled on her floater attempt, she splits a pair at the line, giving DSU a 54-53 lead with 1:21 left in the fourth quarter.

DSU guard Daije Harris gets the steal and passes it ahead to Kiana Coomber on the 2 on 1 fastbreak for a layup, tying the game at 53.

Harris had a game high four steals, the senior guard also led the team with 10 points.

On the previous possession, Coomber hits a long two-pointer to cut the deficit to just two points.

Coomber was second on the team in scoring with nine points, she added six rebounds and two steals as well.

Aliyah Lawson hits a fadeaway three, from the left side of the wing, as the shot clock expires, extending the Eagles lead to four with 4:00 minutes remaining.

Lawson had a game high 18 points, including 5-of-8 from three-point range.

Alexandria Hamiltion gets the ball at the top of the key, drives hard to the left side of the lane and finishes with a scoop layup, giving Coppin State a 50-49 lead with 4:46 left in the game.

There were four lead changes, and three ties during the fourth quarter.

Naomi Shorts gets the steal, passes the ball to Janasia Law, who swings the ball right back to Shorts who spots up and hits the three-pointer giving DSU a 36-25 lead with 9:03 left in the third quarter.

A few possessions later DeMaurea Moore gets a steal, passes the ball to Kiana Coomber before falling out of bounds, Coomber then throws a football style pass 80 feet down the court to a wide open Daije Harris for the layup. Coppin State calls timeout as the Lady Hornets extend their lead to 12, their largest lead of the game.

The Eagles respond with a 16-0 run, highlighted by Aliyah Lawson who made two three-pointers during their flurry. Abby Weiss also hit a three-pointer as well.

DSU quickly found themselves trailing 42-38 by the time the run ended, marking the first time they trailed since their 15-13 deficit early in the second quarter. Lady Hornets forward Zoe Holmes stopped the run by scoring four quick points, including scoring on a second chance opportunity just before the third quarter buzzer sounded, tying the game at 42 as they head into the fourth quarter.
