HORNETS POST 4-SET WIN OVER COLONIALS IN HOME OPENER

Box Score Dover, Del. (Jan. 30, 2021) --- Delaware State won the first two sets to highlight a 3-1 volleyball victory over George Washington in the Hornets' spring '21 home opener today.  DSU won the first set 25-20 and opened up 2-0 lead with a 25-22 victory in set two. The Colonials stayed alive in the match with a 25-23 win in the third set, but the Hornets sealed the win by outscoring G.W. 25-19 in set four to even their record at 1-1 this season.
Freshman Valerio Oterio led DSU with 13 kills, while Mayah Ngundam (sr.) and Alondra Maldonado (fr.) added 10 each. Oterio has a team-high 27 kills in her first two collegiate contest s to the Hornets.  
Sydney Lewis (so.) turned in another efficient hitting performance, tallying seven kills on 10 attacks for a .700 hitting percentage in the match. Lewis has 16 kills and just two errors on 24 attacks for a .583 hitting percentage through two matches this season.
Defensively, Jasmal Cruz (so.) recorded a team-high 13 digs, while the Hornets recorded 14 total team blocks in the match.  Erika Lindqvist (r-so.) had two solo blocks and assisted in four others, while Lewis posted a block solo and six block assists.
In the tightly-played first set, neither team led by more than four points before Lewis ended the set with a kill to give DSU the five-point victory. She led the Hornets with five kills and also assisted on two blocks to lead the way in the set. Maldonado, Lingqvist and Ngundam also recorded two block assists in the opening set.
In set two, Delaware State led 14-9 before George Washington rallied to pull ahead 21-20 on a kill by Liv Womble.
The Hornets answered by scoring five of the last six points, including three on blocks. DSU scored the winning point on a service error by the Colonials.
In the third set, George Washington posted a .355 hitting percentage (16 kills/5 errors/31 attacks) to highlight its win.
Ngundam had four kills, while Otero and Kristi Gomez (fr.) added three each to lead Delaware State to the set four win to close out the match. Gomez also had three of her four service aces in set four.
The Hornets outhit George Washington in the match. DSU had 52 kills and 15 errors on 118 attacks for a .314 hitting percentage. The Colonials posted a .240 percentage, tallying 53 kills and 24 errors on 121 attempts.
Delaware State recorded 11 service aces in the contest.
GW's Elizabeth Drelling led all players with 17 kills in the match.
The Hornets return to action with back-to-back matches against Norfolk State. The first contest is in Norfolk, Va. on Feb. 4 at 4:00 p.m. The teams will meet in Dover for DSU's next home match on Feb. 8 (4:00 pm).
