Dover, Del. (Jan. 29, 2021) --- The spring 2021 Delaware State volleyball team will compete at home for the first time on Sat. (Jan. 30) with a non-conference match against George Washington. The contest is set for 4:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Fans are not permitted to attend due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Hornets (0-1) opened the season with a highly competitive road loss to Old Dominion of Conference USA last Sunday. Delaware State battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match, but came up short in the fifth set of the 3-2 loss to the Monarchs in the season debut.
DSU dropped the first two sets, but rebounded to post a 25-17 victory in set three and evened the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set to force a deciding fifth game.
In the fifth set, the Hornets led 7-3 and 11-8 before Old Dominion stormed back to win the set and match.
Freshman
Valeria Otero was tops for Delaware State with 14 kills, while
Sydney Lewis (so.) and
Alondra Maldonado (fr.) tied for second on the team with nine each. Lewis, a 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic All-Rookie selection, posted a .500 hitting percentage on her 14 attacks in the opening match. She was fourth in the MEAC with a .321 percentage in her freshman season.
Jasmal Crus (so.) was tops on the Hornets' with 11 digs in the opener, while
Mayah Ngundam (sr.) had nine block assists to lead the team, which posted 11 total blocks.
George Washington opens its spring '21 schedule at DSU's fellow MEAC member Morgan State on Fri. (Jan. 29). The Colonials were 15-14 overall and 8-6 in Atlantic 10 in their last season in 2019.
