Dover, Del. (Jan. 17, 2021) --- Delaware State's
Pinky Wiley scored a career-high 29 points, including the 1000
th of his career, but it was overshadowed by the Hornets' 83-79 overtime loss to Norfolk State in a MEAC Northern Division slugfest in Memorial Hall today.
The Spartans outscored DSU 14-10 in overtime, with Tyrese Jenkins, J.J. Matthews and Joe Bryant tallying four points each in the extra period to lead Norfolk State to a two-game sweep of the weekend series and its fourth straight win overall. NSU improved to 8-4 this season and 3-1 in the MEAC North.
Wiley, who entered the game with 980 career points, nailed a three-point shot with 9:08 left in the second half to reach 1002 and give the Hornets a 58-55 lead. He was eight-for-12 from the field, including a career-best seven three-point field goals (7-11), one shy of the school record eight by Marty Bailey (1998) and Kavon Waller (2017).
Wiley's previous career high was 28 points, also against Norfolk State, on Jan. 5, 2019. His previous high of six three-point field goals also came in that 2019 contest at NSU.
Delaware State trailed 51-42 earlier in the second half, but outscored the Spartans 23-6 during a seven-minute stretch of the half to pull ahead by eight. Freshman guard Martaz Robinson capped off the spurt with a basket to give the Hornets a 65-57 lead with 5:36 left in regulation.
Wiley hit one- of-two free throws with 46 seconds left in regulation to give the Hornets a 69-67 lead. Norfolk State's Devante Carter answered with two free throws five seconds later to tie the game.
On the ensuing Delaware State possession, the Hornets turned the ball over on an offensive foul with 32 seconds left in the second half.
Norfolk State's chance for a go-ahead basket on its next possession was rejected on a block by DSU's 7-3
Chris Sodom with six seconds left. The Hornets grabbed the rebound, setting up a potential game-winning shot on the final possession of regulation, but Robinson missed a 15-foot jumper from the left side to send the contest to overtime.
Sodom's five blocks were the most in a game by a Delaware State player since Kendall Gray had five in 2015.
Myles Carter was second on the Hornets with 17 points. He has reached double figures in scoring in five straight games and seven of the eight that he has appeared this season.
Dom Fragala came off the bench to add a season-high 14 for DSU.
Bryant was high scorer for Norfolk State with 19 points.
