Washington, DC (Mar. 5, 2020--- Delaware State ended the 2019-20 regular season on a high note, defeating Howard 100-88 in Burr Gymnasium Thursday evening. The Hornets won for the second time in three games, and second straight on the road, to finish the regular season with a 5-25 overall record and 4-12 mark in the MEAC.
John Crosby led three Delaware State 20-point scorers with 25 points.
Ameer Bennett added a career-high 24 points (8-14 FG; 2-4 3pt FG; 6-8 FT), while
Pinky Wiley also chipped in 24 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field, including 4-of-7 on three-point shots.
The contest marks the first time DSU produced three 20-point scorers in a game since Terence Hood (26), Reggie Stevens (20) and Albert White (26) in a 91-82 victory over Washington College on Nov. 23, 1997.
The Hornets also reached the 100-point mark against a MEAC opponent for the first in exactly five years, since posting a 104-92 victory at Coppin State on Mar. 5, 2015.
In addition, DSU shot a season-high 50.8% from the field vs. Howard, hitting 32 of 62 shots from the field, highlighted by a season-best 12 three-pointers (12 for 25).
The Hornets led 50-29 at the break, and was ahead by as many as 28 points in the second half.
With the win, Delaware State finishes the MEAC regular season race in a tie for eighth with Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Hornets and Hawks split their two regular season meetings, with each team winning on the road. MDES won the first meeting 68-66 on Feb. 3 at Delaware State. The Hornets avenged the defeat with an 84-63 victory at Maryland-Eastern Shore last Saturday.
Delaware State and MDES is expected to meet in the opening round of the 2020 MEAC Tournament in the 8-9 match-up next Tuesday (Mar. 10) in Norfolk, Va.
The MEAC will officially announce the tournament pairings on Friday.
