The Game
Delaware State (12-15; 8-6 MEAC) has lost two games in a row for the first time since MEAC play began this season. The Lady Hornets are looking to bounce back from a 68-53 loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday. The loss all but assures that DSU will finish no higher that fifth in the final regular season league standings. Delaware State hit just 17 of 51 shots from the field (33.3%) in the last outing.
Tierra Floyd was the only starter in double-figures with a team-high 13 points, while
Lyric Turner came off the bench to add 10 points. DSU was also plagued by 21 turnovers in the last outing. Despite the skid, the Lady Hornets have already topped their 2018-19 totals for overall wins (12) and MEAC victories. DSU also has four road victories this season after recording none during the 2018-19 campaign. For the season, guard Sha Collins (jr.) is the team's scoring leader at 12.1 points per game to rank 11th in the MEAC in scoring. A two-time MEAC Co-Player of the Week, Collins is also among the league leaders in field goal percentage, assists, free throw percentage, steals, three-point FG Pct. and minutes played. Turner is second on the Lady Hornets and 17th in the league in scoring at 10.6 points per game. Turner is also the No. 2 free throw shooter in the MEAC at 79.4% (54-for-68) and is fifth in the league in three-point field goals at 1.9 per game (52 total). Lanayjha Ashe is DSU's No. 3 scorer at 9.3 points per game, ranking 23rd in the MEAC this season. The Norfolk State contest will also mark the final Memorial Hall appearance for Lady Hornet seniors Ashe and
Genell Addison.Â
Norfolk State (17-10; 11-3 MEAC) has a half-game lead over Morgan State (11-4) for second place in the MEAC standings. The Lady Spartans are coming off a 69-60 overtime win at home against Howard on Saturday. The Lady Spartans outscored Howard 9-0 in the overtime period. Chanette Hicks led four NSU double-figure scorers with a game-high 20 points. Mikaela Jones added 13 points, while La'Deja James contributed 12 points to the win. Hicks is the MEAC's top scorer at 20.4 points per game, while James is fifth in the league with a 14.3 point per game average.   Â
DSU vs Norfolk State Series History (DSU leads 24-22)
This is the second meeting between the teams this season. Norfolk State won the first contest 65-57 on Feb. 8 in Norfolk, Va. Del. The Lady Spartans outscored Delaware State 12-4 in the overtime period. Norfolk State's Le'Deja James led all players with 27 points in this year's first meeting. Platt-Morris added 14 points, while teammate Blaire Thomas had a game-high 13 rebounds.
