FIVE-RUN SIXTH KEYS BUCS PAST HORNETS FOR SERIES SWEEP

Charleston, S.C. (Mar. 1, 2020) --- Charleston Southern scored five runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game in an 8-4 victory over Delaware State at Nielsen Field today. The Buccaneers swept the four-game series to improve to 6-7 on the season, while the Hornets fell to 2-8.
CSU led 3-1 entering the bottom of the sixth off Delaware State reliever Robert Shorts. After the lead off batter was hit by a pitch, Shane Kelleher followed with a home to left field to give the Bucs a 5-1 lead. Alex Andronica added a two-run single and Maggio singled in the final run of the inning to put the Hornets in an 8-1 hole.
Delaware State opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Arthur Burrell led off the game with a walk and was sacrificed to second by John Weglarz. The bases were loaded with one out when Burrell scored the game's first run on a sac fly by Trey Paige. The Hornets left two runners on base when the inning ended.
Charleston Southern answered with three runs in the bottom of the first off DSU starter Hiram Davis (fr.). There were two outs and no one on base before the Bucs scored their three runs on just one hit. Two of the runs crossed the plate on a Delaware State error.
The Hornets scored two runs on one hit in the eighth to pull to within 8-3. Both runs scored as a result of hit batsmen.
Paige singled in his second run of the game in the DSU ninth to close out the scoring.
The Hornets were outhit 6-3 in the game.
Davis (0-1) allowed two hits and three runs, while striking out two and walking one in two innings to take the loss.
Charleston Southern starter Cam Weinberger was the winning pitcher. He threw six no-hit innings, but allowed the Hornets' first run. Weinberger struck out four batters, but walked four and hit two others.
Delaware State is home for its next game on Wed. (Mar. 4) against La Salle. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Soldier Field.
