Princess Anne, Md. (Feb. 29, 2020) --- Delaware State ended a string of dubious streaks with an 84-63 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in a men's basketball contest at the Hytche Center today.
In addition to snapping an overall seven-game losing streak, the Hornets ended a six-game skid against MDES and a five-year winless stretch on the road against the Hawks.
The 21-point margin of victory was DSU's largest against a MEAC opponent since an 81-55 win over Howard on Feb. 11, 2008.
Myles Carter came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points and
Pinky Wiley also tallied to lead five double-figure scorers for the Hornets.
Carter has reached double-figures in scoring in seven straight and eight of the last nine games, while Wiley has combined for 45 points in the last two contests and also reached double-figures in each of the last seven games. In addition, Wiley has hit 10 three-point field goals in the last two outings.
Fahim Jenetto contributed 14 points,
Omari Peek-Green 12 and
Ameer Bennett 10 to the win.
DSU's
John Crosby, the MEAC's leading scorer at 19.9 points per game, was held to eight points, but led all players with five assists.
"This was truly our best effort of the season," said Delaware State head coach
Eric Skeeters. Â "This win is especially gratifying because the guys have continued to work hard, despite a great deal of adversity this season. It's great to see their efforts rewarded with this win."
The Hornets trailed 15-5 after a basket and free throw by Walter Prevost of the Hawks six minutes into the game.
Delaware State answered with a 14-2 run, and pulled ahead 19-17 on a jumper by Bennett with 10:16 left in the first half.
After MDES regained the lead 20-19, the Hornets by scoring 18 of the next 23 points, and opened up a 37-25 lead on a basket by Carter with 3:23 left before halftime.
DSU led 42-34 at the break.
The Hawks could get no closer than eight points in the second half. The Hornets held their biggest lead, 84-61, on a steal and dunk by Crosby in the final minute.
Delaware State outscored the Hawks 42-29 in the second half.
The Hornets defense held MDES to 17-for-54 shooting from the field (31.5%), including 5-of-31 on three-point attempts (16.1%).
Delaware State also won despite a wide free throw disparity. The Hornets were 11-for-13 at the line (84.6%), while the Hawks attempts 36 free throws, hitting 24 (66.7%).
Delaware State returns to action on Monday with its 2019-20 home finale against Norfolk State. Game time is scheduled for 7:30, following the DSU/NSU women's contest.
The Hornets' 2019-20 women and men seniors will be honored in a ceremony between the games.
